Cracking Down on Dereliction

A €3 million fund is now in place to tackle vacant and derelict homes across Dublin. I’ll be pushing to ensure it delivers real, visible results for our communities.

Tackling Dereliction and Vacancy in Dublin

Derelict and vacant properties are a visible blight on our city, and a wasted opportunity in the midst of a housing crisis. Over the past year, we have been working to ensure that tackling vacancy is prioritised at the Council level, and I’m pleased to report real progress.

Following negotiations around Local Property Tax allocations, a new dedicated unit within Dublin City Council, the Active Land Management Fund, has now been provided with €3 million in funding to address dereliction and vacancy across the city.

This funding will support an immediate programme to identify, acquire, and bring back into use long-term vacant and derelict properties. Critically, it includes provision for the compulsory purchase of properties where owners have failed to act.

In the year ahead, I will be monitoring this programme closely and pressing for further expansion. Dereliction is not just an eyesore, it’s a symptom of inaction that we can no longer afford. We have the tools, we have initial funding, and now we must deliver real results.
